Web Page Making Help Page | Preface | Introduction | HTML vs. PHP | Hosting? | Domain | | Printing | Images Part 1 | Images Part 2 | Help Forum | Preface - My Qualifications Why should you trust any information I provide on this website? The question sounds unpleasant, but I get it quite often, especially from my own students. Many students always wonder why they should trust anything a teacher says. The simple answer is: "If you don't want to trust me, then don't. But if you see everyone else having fun because they learned something, then you missed out." With that said, here are my qualifications regarding web design. From the Beginning Computer programming and engineering run in my family. Although I may be a female, the genes still passed on to me. I'm very lucky to be blessed with the ability to quickly recognize reoccurring patterns. This ability helps GREATLY when it comes to programming and studying. (Teachers and professors always write tests in the same way. So understand how they write the test and it cuts down what you need to study). ~_^ I was lucky to have an introduction to BASIC language when I was in junior high. (Many thanks to the teacher who taught me that!!!) I applied the knowledge from BASIC to programming HTML. I was able to easily see the patterns when I read the source codes of websites in 1995. Also being able to type at 90 WPM helps in programming HTML too. I started out using Netscape Communicator and Notepad in 1995. Majority of my work was typed. I didn't use much images in my earlier works. College I graduated from UCLA with an Economics degree in 3 1/2 years. Of course, I could have graduated in 3, but I goofed off on the computer teaching myself to design webpages (instead of studying). I didn't really pay attention much to Economics, but I needed a major, so that was it. Working When I started working, I designed websites for every company that I worked for. I even designed a website for my company softball team. To create the websites, I used a combination of MacroMedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft Frontpage. I also use WS_FTP to upload my work to the Internet. Teaching At home, I spend my time online working on my webpages and meeting people. I've taught friends and strangers about web designs via email and chatrooms. At my current work, I teach web design in the last semester of school. The software the school uses is FrontPage. But I always start from the ground up -> HTML. The students must start somewhere and HTML is the best way to start. Sure WYSIWYG Editors help make life easier, but beginners still need to know the true power that drives the editors. With the combination of HTML, CSS, and Frontpage, my students have created amazing work. In the process, I've learned many strategies on how to teach beginners. Conclusion - A Guide for Beginners Only
I've watered down the content so that ANY newbie to web design can understand. From my many teaching experiences, I noticed that if I get too technical, I'll lose the group I'm teaching. So if you're about to criticize me for not being technical enough on my terminology used in my help sections, then you should search elsewhere. But if you are a beginner and you want a safe haven to learn beginning web design then welcome to my Designcove. ^_^ Next Chapter -> Chapter 1 "Introduction"
