July 17 (Tues) Chip In Training

Written by Mary on July 17th, 2007

I want my mom and dad to know that I have been training hard while they have been away. This morning I got to jog again. I have built some stamina so I can run at Mary’s side just like I can heel when I walk. Today I decided to match her pace and not try to drag her along, then tire out and have her drag me along. This ‘pace’ thing is tricky! But, now I can run along the shorter side of Mary’s complex without getting tired. The longer side still has interesting trees so stopping here and there is good for me. This afternoon I got to wander slowly around the complex because it was a bit warmer and Mary wouldn’t let me go fast.

The best part of today happened during my night walk! I came around to a grassy spot and there was a very recent scent of a bunny! I was so excited at this fresh scent that I followed it really quickly and was hopping around so I could see where it led. I realized it went around the corner of the building so I started after it before the bunny was too far away to see… Mary doesn’t have a good nose because she first thought I was chasing after a bug and made me sit while she tried to look in my mouth. Right after that, though, I tried to run after the bunny because I SAW IT!!! It was only 20 feet or so away… but Mary held onto my leash and wouldn’t let me run. She made me sit and lie down and stay. NO FUN!!! My tail was wagging and I wanted to chase but I was told to stay… so I scuttled forward on all fours, more or less on my belly, hoping Mary wouldn’t notice. Well, she did… and told me to stay again. That lasted a couple of seconds until I tried to wiggle forward again, but she made me stay till I calmed down. Oh well. One day I will have my chance to run (I have been training, after all)… One day…

P.S. I like Kashi Crunch cereal.

Wow Mary! You’re doing a GREAT job with Chip! I didn’t think it was possible to train him to run next to us without tripping us all up.

Oh and Chip is very sneaky with those rabbits, isn’t he?? Last time he wanted to chase this squirrel so badly, that he was shaking. Poor Chip … the squirrel was sooo taunting him.
