July 8, Sunday: Post from Chip - Excitement at the bark park

Written by Mary on July 8th, 2007

Today was another busy day (says Chip)! We took a long walk and went outside of Mary’s complex. I thought we would go to the big park again, but we just went up a hill and walked around a bunch of houses. Not as many good smells as the park with the bunnies… Then, in the afternoon Mary went to a place that sold lots of smelly beans. She was drinking some strange drink, but I found out that almond croissants are very tasty!

Then, we went to a little bark park in Laguna Niguel. There were five other dogs there, and a bunch of old women. Most of the dogs were nice, but one kept trying to mount me. After 5 or 6 times, I had enough! Before Mary pulled me away, we had a little fight. The other dog’s owner didn’t do anything to help, and the other old women were mean. They acted like it was their park because they go there ever day and said I should leave, when I didn’t pick the fight! I don’t know why I had to leave…

Anyway, this evening is another quiet one checking out the neighborhood from the patio. Not much to guard against, but I have to do my job!

Do I wake him for his evening walk or let him sleep with abandon?

Hi Chip! Mommy and Daddy are very happy that you love almond croissants. Also you need to stop sleeping in that position because you just MISSED OUT on a really good walk.

As for those mean old ladies, just flash them your PROUD AKC GOOD CITIZENSHIP TAG. This will show them that you’re the best behaved dog in the dog park and the OTHER meanie dog must leave.

By the way, having the AKC Good Citizenship tag gives you legal right to go to any dog park. NO ONE is allowed to tell you to leave. If they do, give mommy their name and phone number and I’ll get them in BIG BIG BIG trouble.

Chip wants to let you know that he did remember to wake up for a walk…

I didn’t know that the good citizenship tag had so much clout! Good to know… They were friendly at first, but when I think back on it the last time or two the other dog tried to mount Chip, they were only saying “No, Chip” That let the other dog know what he was doing was ok… They were fussing over him when I left, so that dog probably feels he was doing what they wanted in protecting ‘his’ park.

They are leisure world ladies who exercise their dogs by sitting in the shade at the dog park all afternoon, after all!

They don’t know that Chip has lots of long walks and he gets to do lots of sniffing and stuff because he does listen (most of the time) and comes, sits, and stays every 2 or 3 minutes because Mary is demanding and even more stubborn than he is! Well, maybe he’s realizing it now. Half the time he comes and sits next to me when he’s done with a tree before I tell him to come…
